Pokémon Origin Form Explained
Pokémon Origin Form or Origin Forme, is one of a number of different forms that can be found in some Pokémon characters. The term Origin Form refers to their true appearance, the way they appear in their original world. Altered form is the likeness that is shown when they leave their worlds.
There are three Pokémon that have Origin Form – Giratina, Dialga and Palkia. These three Legendary Pokémon Pokémon are collectively known as the Creation Trio, (sometimes the Deity Trio or the Dragon Trio). They are Generation IV Pokémon that appear in the Sinnoh legends. When they are seen in the Pokémon World they adopt Altered Form (shown below).
However, under certain conditions, these Pokémon can be seen in their Origin Form.
Dialga
Dialga lives in another dimension and is able to control time. This ability means it can travel to the past and future. It can also make time go faster or slower.
When Altered Form Dialga is given the Adamant Crystal it will change to origin form. Origin form Dialga first appeared in the game Pokémon Legends Arceus, which released January 2022.
Origin Form Dialga’s base stats remain the same as those for its Altered Form, but its Special Defense is increased while its attack is reduced.
Palkia
Palkia lives in a parallel world and has the ability to control space. It is able to warp to other places or dimensions.
Altered Form, Palkia will change to Origin Form if given the Lustrous Globe. Origin form Dialga first appeared in the game Pokémon Legends Arceus, which released January 2022.
Origin Form Palkia’s base stats remain the same as its Altered Form, but its speed is increased and its attack is reduced.
Giratina
Giratina lives in the Distortion World where it is able to travel through time, space and other dimensions.
When Altered Form Giratina i is presented with the Griseous Orb, it will change to Origin Form.
Origin Form Giratina first appeared in the movie Giratina and the Sky Warrior which released in Japan in July 2008. It also appeared in the Pokémon Platinum game which released in September 2008 where it could be seen in Origin Form in the Distortion World or when holding the Griseous Orb.
Origin Form Giratina’s attack and special attack stats are switched with its defence and special defence.
Pokémon Origin Form in the Trading Card Game
Origin Form Pokémon cards were first featured in the May 2022 expansion set – Astral Radiance. They were also released as Sword and Shield Promo Cards and in the Galarian Gallery of Crown Zenith.
To date the only Origin Form Pokémon to be featured on Trading Cards are Dialga and Palkia. The cards can be identified by the words ‘Origin Forme’ to the left of their name.
All released cards featuring Origin Forme Dialga or Palkia have a speciality – they are either Pokémon V or Pokémon VSTAR.
Two Premium VSTAR Collection Boxes featuring Origin Forme Dialga and Palkia were released in November 2022.
For those wishing to use Origin Form Pokémon cards, an Origin Forme Palkia VSTAR League Battle Deck was released in May 2023 which includes a 60 card deck headed by Origin Forme Palkia V and VSTAR.
Just an FYI, Giratina’s origin form was already revealed in the movie: Giratina and the Sky Warrior, and in the game pokemon platinum, where it takes that from in the distortion world, or indeed when given the Griseous Orb.

Interesting read! I had no idea there was so much depth to the origins of Pokémon. The idea of them being ancient beings with their own cultures and societies is really fascinating.
