Pokémon Ace Spec Cards Explained
Pokémon Ace Spec cards were first introduced to the Pokémon Trading Card Game (TCG) in November 2012 with the release of the Black and White Boundaries Crossed expansion set. They will make a return in 2024.

Pokémon Ace Spec cards are Trainer Item cards that have unique, special effects that are beneficial to the player of those cards. These effects range from drawing extra cards, to recovering Pokémon from the discard pile, to granting immunity to certain effects. This new mechanic introduced new strategies into the Trading Card Game (TCG) and its return in 2024 is eagerly anticipated by players of the game.
Which Sets have Pokémon Ace Spec Cards?
From their first release in 2012, Ace Spec cards were included with the remaining three regular expansion sets of the Black and White Series. They are set to return in 2024 but no specific details regarding dates or sets has yet been released.
To date 13 cards have been released. 4 cards were included with the 2012 Boundaries Crossed set, 3 with the Plasma Storm set, 2 with Plasma Freeze and 3 with Plasma Blast.
The Pokémon Ace Spec card, Computer Search, above, is from the Black and White Boundaries Crossed expansion. The text on the card reads: ‘Discard 2 cards from your hand. (If you can’t discard 2 cards, you can’t play this card.) Search your deck for a card and put it into your hand. Shuffle your deck afterward.’
How to Identify Pokémon Ace Spec Cards
The Black and White Series Ace Spec Cards are easily identified. They are all Trainer Item cards that have the words ACE SPEC printed on both sides of the card. On the left side of the card the words ACE SPEC are written in red, with a blue outline against a grey background at the bottom of the card.
On the right side of the card, the words ACE SPEC are written in red, with blue outline against a white background at the top of the card. The Ace Spec is written next to this in white text against a blue and red background.
How are Pokémon Ace Spec Cards used in the Trading Card Game?
Although Pokémon Ace Spec cards were only released in four sets of the Black and White series, they were an important addition, bringing a new layer of strategy for players of the Trading Card Game. When attached to a Pokémon the Black and White Pokémon Ace Spec cards provided useful effects including: adding extra damage, increasing the HP of specific cards, healing Pokémon, allowing the discarding and replacing of cards, switching out active Pokémon and reducing the number of prize cards an opponent gets.
It has not yet been revealed what specific effects the 2024 Ace Spec cards will bring to the game. This article will be updated as soon as that information is revealed.
