This article offers insight, explanation and images of the new Pokémon rarity symbols introduced with the release of the Scarlet and Violet series.
Prior to the release of the Scarlet and Violet series, there were just four Pokémon rarity symbols and all types of Rare Cards, from holo rare to secret rainbow rare were marked with a single star.
On March 31st 2023, the Scarlet and Violet base set was released. All cards from this set onwards are marked with a rarity symbol that clearly identifies what rarity type that card is. Some rarity symbols and types have remained the same, while others have changed.

Common Cards – these remain the same and are non-holo cards marked with a single circle.
Uncommon Cards – these also remain the same and are non-holo cards marked with a single diamond.
Rare cards – non-holo rare cards have been discontinued. All Rare cards now have a holographic image. They are marked with a single black star.
Double Rare cards – previously referred to as Half Art cards, these are now marked with two black stars.
Illustration Rare cards – these are Full Art cards, that are alternate art versions of Common, Uncommon or Rare cards.They are numbered above the set number. They are marked with a single gold star.
Ultra Rare cards – prior to the release of this set, Ultra Rare cards were the art cards that occupied the last numbers of the set. Ultra rare cards are now numbered above the set number and are marked with two white stars.
Special Illustration Rare cards – These are Full art alternate art versions of ex or Trainer supporter cards. They are numbered above the set number and are marked with two gold stars.
Hyper Rare cards – previously known as Gold Secret Rare, they are Full Art gold foil cards. These cards are marked with three gold stars.
Parralel Foil Cards – previously called Reverse Holo cards – these can be Common, Uncommon or Rare cards and are marked with the appropriate symbol.
