Poison Type Pokémon in the TCG

While there are 18 different Pokémon types in the Pokédex and Video Game series, in the Trading Card Game (TCG) there are only 11 different Pokémon types. This means that in the TCG some categories contain more than one of the Game Pokémon types.

Prior to 2007, Poison type Pokémon were included with Grass and Bug types. With the launch of the Diamond and Pearl series in 2007, Poison types moved from Grass to be included with Psychic types.

Poison Type Pokémon were moved again in 2020 and are now included with Dark Type Pokémon.

The Trading Cards for these Pokémon have the Darkness symbol in the top right-hand corner, next to the HP.

023/165 Ekans

To use the Acid Spray attack associated with this card, the player must attach two Basic Darkness Energy cards. When deciding which cards to include in a deck, players should be aware of the qualities and requirements of their chosen Pokémon cards.

At the bottom of the card is detailed information about that card’s weakness, resistance and retreat cost.

Weakness

In the TCG, Poison / Dark type Pokémon generally have a weakness to Fighting types. The Ekans card shows this weakness to Fighting type Pokémon and attacks from these types do double damage.

Resistance

Poison / Dark Pokémon cards are resistant to attacks by Grass and Fighting type Pokémon and the HP damage from these types maybe reduced.
