What are Basic Metal Energy Cards?
Metal Energy Cards are one of the nine Basic Energy Cards that are used in the Pokémon Trading Card Game (TCG). However, they were first introduced as Special Energy Cards in 2000 with the launch of the Neo Genesis Set and continued to be produced until 2011. They were released as Basic Energy Cards in 2007 with the launch of the Diamond and Pearl Set and have continued to be released as Basic Energy Cards ever since.

Although there have been many design changes over the years, Metal Energy Cards are always predominantly grey and always feature the Metal symbol of a black inverted triangle with brackets at the corners on a grey circle. (Scroll to bottom for timeline and gallery of all designs to date).
Metal Energy corresponds to Steel type Pokémon and their cards always include the Metal Energy symbol in the top right hand corner. In order to use an Attack Move of a Steel type Pokémon, the player will need to attach the specified number of Metal and/or Colorless Energy Cards. The numbers required are indicated by the symbols to the left of the Attack Move.
A Metal Energy Card can also be used when the Colorless Energy symbol appears because Colorless Energy can be any type of Energy.
The Scizor ex card from the Temporal Forces expansion has two Moves / Attacks. To use Steel Wing the player must attach two Colorless Energy. To use Cross Breaker, two Basic Metal Energy are required.
Timeline of Metal Energy Cards:
There were 5 different designs of Metal Special Energy Cards and to date there have been 12 different designs of Metal Basic Energy Cards. Energy Cards were given numbers up to the release of the Sun and Moon series in 2017. The only Basic Energy cards to be given numbers from 2017 onwards are those that are released as Secret Rares.
